Line Shadow Movement

A distortion of line viewed through the quality of shadow

Curation is the art of using the exhibition space and the artwork to tell a story

As I work, I pass through various stages. In making `Line Shadow Movement’ I know there is a story (sometimes hidden) because something about an idea caught my attention. I catch elements of a story with some details seen clearly and others obscured. When a story is revealed I want to control every element of the curation. However, it is the combining of the artwork with the space that reveals the final story.

The myth of the white wall gallery as tabula rasa for the artists stories

The intimidation of the white wall gallery is real. There is a myth – misdirection – which is that the gallery is an empty space provided for artists stories. Such gallery spaces are not empty, they are not quiet – they shout elitism and exclusivity. It is too easy for gallery spaces and curation to impose their own stories over those of the artist.

Inviting @Insamnohty to be involved in not only the curation but in the creation of the gallery space where the artwork will reveal its story, is an invitation to collaborate in the creation and presentation of the story. All elements are interrelated. When you enter a collaboration the story told is negotiated between those involved. Without this cooperation, the story is lost – if keyed to the same underlying themes and ideas they develop a positive synergy as they concurrently add differing perspectives and context.

Line Shadow Movement

By clicking on the link below you will be taken to the Line Shadow Movement Gallery. To visit the gallery click PLAY. You are at the gallery entrance and use the mouse to read the instructions on the walls around you. You will move around the gallery using your keyboard and mouse. Enter the gallery. There is an elevating ramp that allows you to view the object from a raised platform – you control this with your keyboard.

You leave the gallery via a number of doors, which take you into a corridor. Here there are a number of objects to explore. Select an object by moving along the corridor and entering its space. This transports you back to the gallery entrance from where you enter the viewing room. The new object is ready to view and explore.

Please be aware that, at the moment, Line Shadow Movement can only be viewed on a computer.

This is a prototype and @Insamnohty and I continue our collaboration to develop the gallery further.
