Virtual Eye – The Process

Virtual Eye will be a virtual exhibition for digital space in which I will curate, create and share a set of virtual portraits. To do this I intend to invite participants to use social media to explore the idea of `self’ in the digital age.

Using Twitter (Cliff@Clifffart) and @VirtualEyeArt invited participants will share objects as a non-verbal vocabulary with which to describe themselves. They will discuss the objects selected – what they mean to them, and what they might say about them. For each individual, I will curate a selection of images from their photographed objects.

Throughout the creative process, objects will be sorted and resorted, creating four representations of each participant. The digital curation presents each collection as a distinct set and then intermixes them with one other so emphasising the complexity and interaction of the separate aspects.

I will translate the final selection of 2D objects into a 3D virtual reality. Each individual will be represented by four collections presented in a glass box. This will be animated to reveal all sides of the virtual box. The individual is confined yet visible, vulnerable to both comment, compliment and criticism.

This is an exploration of a type of portraiture: an exploration of the representation of the individual via objects shared in the digital world.

I intend to investigate the paradox of digital memory that fades quickly with constant streaming, yet archives completely in the `big data’ pool, collecting for the future digital archaeologist. I intend to curate, create and share a set of portraits, using social media to explore the idea of `self’ in the digital age.

Digital 3D – Virtual Glass Box

“We live in a digital era characterised by the anxiety around self as a product: what it means, who owns it, what it costs and what it is worth.” (India Ennenga `Toward a More Radical Selfie‘ The Paris Review – 27 Nov 2018)
